Layla Moran in Brussels

The Liberal Democrats in Belgium were delighted to welcome Layla Moran, Lib Dem MP for Oxford West and Abingdon, to Brussels last Friday (27/04).

20 Lib Dems gathered over wine and cheese to hear Layla give an overview of the current state of the anti-Brexit movement, including her involvement in the cross-party people's vote campaign. She was delighted to get some feedback from policy experts and all those affected in the room.

As a former teacher and the party's education spokesperson, Layla also had a few words to say about the party's new education policy, which was agreed at the last conference. Layla reported that it has proved very popular among teachers.

Our members then shared their own perspectives and worries on Brexit, and quizzed Layla on her experiences as a new MP, with questions ranging from fishing policies to education.

Layla called for support ahead of the local elections, due to take place on 3 May. She is defending a wafer-thin majority against the Conservatives and is optimistic the Lib Dems in Oxfordshire might win a few local victories to help shore up her position.

Liberal Democrats in Europe provided substantial support to Layla's campaign during the 2017 General Election and we look forward to working more closely together in future, starting with a phone bank session next week. More info to follow!

Liberal Democrats in Belgium would like to say a big thank you to our hosts, the former President of the ALDE Party, Sir Graham Watson and his wife Rita.
